Norway 2016 - The Hungry Hearts feat. Lisa Dillan - Laika

An oompah disco song from a lesbian performance art group about the first dog in space*?

This is what Eurovision is for!

*(At least, that what the title and lyric suggests the theme is about – forgive us if we've missed some specialist jargon here!)

Now with added live video for full spacey goodness. You won't see many better, or at least more unhinged performances all year!

  1. An interesting thing from the VK Melodi Grand Prix fan page. With every song there's also a poll gauging how VK fans like the song. Not many of the MGP songs are actually getting a positive response, but one that is getting a huge amount of support is "Laika"! But what Russian fan wouldn't love hearing their capital city immortalised in such an amazing song?

  2. I actually completely disagree. I feel that his song isn't only horrible, it's really disrespectful. The lyrics are damn right offensive. "And then you left me here. Out in the atmosphere. Without my disco"? It's a a jibe at Russia and the space program that their so proud of. Plus, being a lesbian singing about "bringing her girlfriend" to Moscow. I'm sorry, but it's such a terrible song and a terrible way of tackling any kind of issue you might want to tackle. I'm against this with every fiber of my being.

    1. I totally understand that you disagree. People who are narrow-minded tend to have that opinion. They expect every one else to live in a particular pattern (the nationalistic heterosexual way) and despise every one else that is different both in thought and act, that dares to take the freedom in life to live there own lives, as they truly are. No longer accepting fitting in to a certain standard enforced by the doll gray mass. To have the courage to do that is a threat to the nationalistic dictatorial society (according to a dictatorial viewpoint) which you probably prefer. However there are many of us who don’t agree whit that way of thinking about life and therefor you should respect that standpoint before you judge anybody else. Unfortunately there are still some countries in the world where dictatorial madness still thrives and I´m glad not to belong to such a country because I believe in freedom for everyone to be who they are without being judged and limited by ignorant ideologies.

    2. Whoa there Magnus! Seems to me that you're accusing somebody of something without knowing much about them just from a few words on a website disagreeing with your world view. If you'd taken time to engage with Ido rather than harangue him you'd probably discover that he's not all that different to you.

Calling people narrow-minded is a very lofty perch to sit on, and to pull it off you have to be bang on in all your assertions at all times. I'll leave you to be the judge of whether you've managed that or not.

Just because a fella didn't much like a song - for whatever reason - is no cause to be flinging a treatise at him without any further discourse.

You'll be surprised to hear that personally I agree with much of what you're saying, although I'd probably never choose to proclaim it in such a snooty 'I'm better than you' manner.

But thanks for contributing to this site, and I'd be interested to hear more of your views on many of the other songs.

  4. I've been watching the Hungry Hearts' other online work (most of which is on Vimeo, not YouTube), and suddenly I'm very concerned about their presentation. They're more of a performance art troupe than a music group, they're WAY out in Yoko Ono artsy-fartsy land, and their work consists almost entirely of standing completely still. Seriously … THEY DON'T MOVE. EVER.

I admit that I'm too much of an artistic Philistine to appreciate such highbrow shenanigans, but I do know that if they think they're going to pull that stuff at MGP, that will be … unfortunate.

Which will suck. This is the first song I've heard this year that I absolutely LOVE. (And it was available in the American iTunes store!)
