Italy 2017 - Francesco Gabbani - Occidentali's Karma

Now this was quite a thing. A cheeky looking chappy with a bright jumper and a whispy looking tache bounded his way whole-heartedly through the first couple of verse/choruses of this bouncy little tune, and packed the lyric with funny little English language hints and suggestions throughout.

Once in a while the whole orchestra barked a gleeful "olé!" at the top of their lungs, as our new hero bounced about with much gusto.

Then something unexpected happened that you could never possibly guess, but I won't spoil that bit of the fun for you.

One of the rare upbeat numbers this week, it was happy fun from start to finish, and gained the biggest ripple of the night when it got announced as a qualifier as the credits rolled at the end of another multi-hour marathon. This couldn't win the thing by accident, could it?

He had my favourite song from last year, and it seems now for 2017 Sanremo as well!

  2. It's fabulous.

But how on earth they are going to this on Eurovision(if it gets there).
Remember no orchestra in ESC and part of the charm of this, is the orchestra joining in

  3. Bet that jumper itches to hell and back...

Love it - we need something like that in Kyiv, along with Naviband, to break up all the female ballads we seem to be loading up this year!

  4. Queuing the fans to chime in Shai. If they can put up an instruction to turn on mobile phone lights they can queue the shouts!

    1. I'm sorry John but that just not the same.

I'm quite sure the orchestra had to practice this for quite some time and they also have the music sheets for a mark, where they need to go "olé".
In ESC you have 2 times a crowd of 10000 different people(not all of them has a musical ear) where in both cases it need to be done right. It can all go very wrong if a fraction of the crowd goes too early or too late,

  5. Oh dear, it seems like our household is in a minority here. We thought that the song was cool and fun but Francesco wasn't quirky enough to sell it, because he can definitely sing it. You expect this cool singer/songwriter vibe from him from his voice and choice of costume but it all ends up feeling as if he's not taking the performance seriously. This results in a really silly performance. What a huge miss, and it's a shame. Oh, and seriously? a gorilla? have we learnt nothing???

    1. Yes, but unless they use subtitles on the final show or use an English version of the song, no-one will understand a word of said lyrics... And with such a lyric based song, it will all he a bit pointless and silly.
