Belarus 2015 - Sweet Brains - Run Away

So I go away for a few days in a place beyond all wi-fi connections (Lisbon). When I did finally get a wispy signal in a dodgy backstreet fado bar in Bairrio Alto I found a barrage of messages all saying just one thing - "You've got to see this song!"

But by the time I finally got a link strong enough to play the video,  I learned that it had been saxked from the Belarussian final already! There is no justice!

You will love this one camera audition video for the backing monster on the right's leg dancing alone! A sad loss to Eurovision and all who sail in her.

STOP PRESS
It turns out that no one at TRM has ever played Plants Vs Zombies either, as they've shortlisted it for the Moldovan audition process. Oh mercy - who's going to tell them?

****MORE STOP PRESS***

  1. This is really awesome! Their fans already created petition on change.org in order to change the decision of Belarussion jury and include this band in the final (around 5000 people already signed it):

  4. I too was very impressed and started to support this "Sweet Brains" Zombie Band BUT IT IS ALL A HOAX! FRAUD! They are a terrible group of young people in Minsk Belarus who cheated everyone to support their cause. They made a JOKE of Eurovision. They STOLE their song from the original talented composer Laura Shigihara! She is of Japanese American decent http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laura_Shigihara They stole the music, the characters, even their dance performance was from this Plants vs Zombies video game. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v5-Rxe7BL7M

  5. Please stop this injustice, social media and online is a dangerous place for the victims of FRAUD! These guys are terrible, do not show their faces or names. http://vk.com/sweetbrains http://vk.com/sweetbrainsblr created an online support on Change.org website seeking ATTENTION! DO NOT SUPPORT THIS FAKE Group. There are much better people who needs your support for real justice, real cause and real purpose. Sweet Brains are FAKE, HOAX and causing DAMAGE to the true believers of good society. Damaged Eurovision branding and organization!

  6. Oh boy, here we go again. People being accused of plagiarism in the Eurovision Song Contest when there's absolutely ... no ... uh ... evidence ... er ... hmmmmmmm ...

Oh. Never mind. Carry on then. (Well, crap. It's a good song too.)

  7. Good song yes, it is a very good song. I agree and it is why there needs to be a fair play in such situations. Laura Shingihara is a successful accomplished musician who developed this song melody after several variations and has been developing her style for a very long time. Sweet Brain has no prior history, profile of their music in any form what so ever. They created one social media page, ripped this backing track and created some original lyrics. All the image of their characters are from the "Plants vs Zombies" which cannot be disputed. Their backing track was a complete rip off of Laura's hard work and creativity. How Sweet Brain can come up with this on their own, perhaps it could be, but let us open our minds to the sad truth that some people as good as they may be are desperate for attention in an environment which is lacking opportunities. SAD!

  8. Who cares. They have around 100000 YouTube vies for 7 days and 10000 fans joined their fan club.

I agree that crap or what ever but it's a good band with a good song

    1. A good song that violates about half a dozen Eurovision rules, including the ones about release date, promoting a commercial product (the Plants vs. Zombies game), and (ahem) plagiarizing.

If Belarus tried to submit it, the EBU would kick it out.

    2. Let's stick to facts only. Their main VK social media group site only has at today's count 829 people following them http://vk.com/sweetbrainsblr Youtube sits at 47k so Peter, let's stay on facts. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6CuTsLTrN9E On the good note, they make popular a game theme song to pop music level, now if they actually do have any talent besides copying and ripping other artists works which I find personally criminal, time will tell of future musical works of THEIR Original sounds. Interesting group yes, but a cheap hit at Eurovision without any substance. If anything is good about them at all, they did something?

  9. Fair enough, it does turn out to be a pretty obvious lift, but you do have to admit their moxy for giving it a shot! And you can fake that geezer's dynamite legs!

    1. Yes Agree Roy, always open to see the positives. Exotic to see originating from a desperate country where the best talented people are driving taxis and needing better opportunities.

  10. Just out of interest, why are you so terribly het up about a song that got the boot over half a week ago? You're practically doing their press for them for free!

  12. That's excellent Denis! Great spot!

My point is, Mariana, as our friend here has just shown, you can cry plagiat on practically any song if you look hard enough, and if the songs you write aren't especially original or imaginative, that's going to be a much easier task.

Fair enough, it's clear that Sweet Brains were pushing the envelope just a little further than usual for this contest, but who knows their intentions? It could have been an elaborate in-joke, or even a weird attempt by the PvsZ people to up the profile. Or perhaps they simply didn't know the rules.

Either way, they've added a lot of spice to the early stages of this contest, and got a lot of people talking about both themselves - and the Belarussian qualifiers too. And you certainly seem to be very happy to help them do that!

    Good work!

  13. One more important thing as far as I know they've contacted the Japanese composer of the original soundtrack (author) and she gave them all the rights to re-write the song... It's just a gossip anyway
