Finland 2021 - Danny - Sinä Päivänä Kun Kaikki Rakastaa Mua

As the years roll on, you get to an age where however cynical you want to appear, a sentimental song sung well by a senior with the weight of the world etched into their face will get you on a weep. But every now and again one will ramp it up a dozen notches and absolutely wipe the floor with your emotions. And oh boy has Danny here just done that in our house.

For those who don't know him, this singer is a much-loved 78-year-old veteran of the Finnish music scene. When it was announced that he'd be taking part, most of us just assumed that he'd be giving us a nice nostalgic slice of pedestrian rock'n'roll. What we weren't prepared for, however, was a list on instructions for his own funeral. But wait! As mawkish as that might sound, Danny's sardonic wit and cheeky glint life it into the realms of the glorious - although having said that, we were still in floods of tears before the end of the third line.

There'll be plenty of folks who just won't get this, and that's fine. But remember, music isn't only for young people, and for those of us with a few years on the clock who are increasingly aware of our own mortality it's an absolute bloody masterclass in dark humour and perfect delivery. I'm not sure that I'm going to hear a better song all year - in any musical realm.

  1. This was a total surprise - I watched it first without subtitles but still got the sense there was a big dose of subtle humour there. The Finns in the YouTube comments stressed getting the whole story with the subtitles...

Watched it again with them on and Danny's story about what could have been such a morbid tale is beautifully constructed and so darkly humorous in a tongue-in-cheek way that it made me smile all the way through! Such incredible words about the day when everyone loves him and the subtlety with which the cynicism is delivered, along with Danny's wry smile, makes this yet another superb emotional masterclass from UMK 2021. We have already had Oskr's heartbreak during "Lie" - can there be any more entries that will be tugging on the emotional heartstrings?

This is a wonderful entry and UMK is building up to be THE NATIONAL FINAL of 2021...

  2. I have to say that With the two Nordic countries that have already released some of their songs (and more to come) and Estonia releasing all of its songs, they are really not holding back. There are some real gems out there.

Now for the matter on hand. I love this. It's so honest and drama-less and whole. And the subtitles fit into the melody, so I have a sneaking suspicion that an English version has been written and maybe recorded. Do I want this to win, maybe. Not sure yet. But I'm so very happy it's there! I'll wait and see what the hubby thinks...

  3. I think, for me, I don’t care how well it does. Because it exists and it’ll be there for us forever. I can totally understand the kids not getting it, though. It’s not really for them, anyway. It’s for old gimmers like me!

  4. This should stay in the original language, English version may loose some of the charm it has and who knows he can bring the same atmosphere to a language which he isn't his native one.

    P.s.

He might, just might does a Sobral but this will be a discussion if he ever get to Eurovision
